Could I live on $20 weekly for groceries?

I was wondering how low I could out my grocery budget if I needed to save money. I thought that I should be able to take my $30 down to $20 a week. Would I enjoy it? Probably not but it would do the job in case of an emergency.

I decided to do price checks and make up a meal plan to test my theory. I did all my "shopping" at No Frills since my Walmart doesn't have a fully stocked grocery section yet. I know, due to making my own comparison list, that shopping No Frills or Walmart is cheaper than Sobeys. (Have I shared that list with you yet?)

I'm doing this as if all I have in my cupboards is spices and there are no sales on.

Option # 1

12 eggs = $2.57
1 loaf bread = $1.47
700g box rice x 2 = $5.98
1 can refried beans = $2.49
1 can tuna = $0.99
1 box pasta = $1.25
1 bag frozen peas = $3.97
1 can mushroom soup = $0.99

Total = $19.71

Breakfasts
Toast & egg = 7 meals

Lunches/Suppers
Rice & bean "sandwhich" = 4 meals
Tuna casserole (half cans) = 2 meals
Rice & tuna casserole (half cans) = 2 meals
Rice & peas = 4 meals
Noodles & peas = 2 Meals

Option #2

Bag of potatoes = $ 4.99
1 can creamed corn = $0.87
1 can brown beans = $0.87
Butter = $2.97
1 loaf bread = $1.47
12 eggs = $2.57
1 head cabbage = $3.00 (estimate)

Total = $16.74

Breakfasts
Hash browns, egg, toast = 7 meals

Lunches/Suppers
Potatoes with creamed corn = 2 meals
Potatoes with green beans = 2 meals
Brown beans and toast = 2 meals
Fried potatoes and cabbage = 2 meal
Fried egg and cabbage = 3 meal
Potato cake and cabbage = 3 meals

(Fun fact, potatoes with skins on have nearly all the vitamins a person needs to live. Butter or milk completes the vitamins. Read an interesting article about living on potatoes for a week here.)

It's good to know that I could make due in an emergency. It would be easier in real life too because I would have my pantry items to add variety and likely a sale or two to take advantage of.

How low do you think you think you could get your weekly budget?
